Our client asked us to design a planting scheme for this prestigious penthouse roof garden.

Overlooking the tidal River Thames, the terrace is subject to challenging wind exposure. The brief was to create a scheme that would stand up to these conditions, provide structure all year and a framework for seasonal floral interest. Sculptural planting was desired but should be balanced to avoid conflicting with views of the existing statue of the running man.

Plants choices were carefully made from species tolerant of coastal exposure. The specimen plants were selected by David from Italian stock for their quality and consistency.  The evergreen Bonsai cloud trees (Ilex crenata) and Taxus topiary balls feature as signature plants and lend a certain quirky charm to the scheme.

Transition to the upper terrace ‘room’ is defined by half standard Strawberry Trees (Arbutus unedo) which are positioned to maintain open views to the statue and River Thames backdrop.
Textural and colour planting is provided by blocks of Astelia, Erica, Lavandula, Stipa, Salvia and others, with planting pockets of floral herbaceous interest refreshed seasonally to create a changing picture through the year.
